Correction of a Gummy Smile
For most people, smiling is an expression of happiness, but for individuals that show more of their gums, it can be a source of insecurity. Those with a gummy smile may try to prevent smiling or even hide their smile.
Dr. Holly van Hofwegen has been trained as a neuromuscular dentist and also by the International Academy of Facial Aesthetics to administer Botox and FDA approved dermal fillers, such as Juvederm or Restylane. A thorough evaluation of your teeth, smile and face will help her to understand the unique cause of your gummy smile. For some patients it may be hyperactive muscles, while for others it could be a skeletal or tooth problem. After a diagnosis is made, Dr. van Hofwegen will discuss the best treatment options for you.
One of the most common causes of a gummy smile is hyperactive muscles in the upper lip. A very simple, non-surgical technique to treat this can be used. Injecting small amounts of Botox into these muscles will help to relax them. This procedure simply tones down the pull of the upper lip so it doesn’t get pulled up as high when you smile, revealing an excess of gum tissue. The procedure takes about 10 minutes and full results will be seen in 10-14 days.
